NEW YORK — Michigan retailer Leon & Lulu has won a Special Award for Service to the Community from Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine, a sister publication of Furniture/Today.
The honor, in a surprise category created for the magazine's 59th annual Retailer Excellence Awards, cited the 65 in-store events the retailer held last year, most of which supported local nonprofits. Leon & Lulu is a 15,000-square-foot home furnishings and accessories store in Clawson, Mich., in metro Detroit.
Judges for the awards also crowned the store's co-owner, Mary Liz Curtin, as "Queen of Quite a Lot" in a bow to her personality and approach to the business.
"I encourage other retailers to support local charities any way they can," Curtin said after accepting the award. "It makes you feel great, broadens your reach and every charity needs as many friends in the business community as possible."
