On March 14, the Clawson Chamber of Commerce bestowed its 2012 Volunteer of the Year award on Thompson. "I was excited and honored, but embarrassed, too," Thompson said. "It's a team effort, not a one person type deal."
Mary Liz Curtin and Stephen Scannell, owners of Leon & Lulu, were honored as Business Person of the Year. Clawson Chamber President Char Lawson called their furniture, gift and accessory emporium, located in the former Ambassador Roller Rink at 96 W. 14 Mile Road, "the most unique store I've ever seen -- a destination," noting that the couple takes "an entertaining, civic-minded business approach."
The husband and wife team host about 55 charitable parties in the store every year. Coming up next is "Mix, Mingle & MAC," an auction to benefit the Michigan AIDS Coalition, from 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 30. Tickets are $45 at the door and include refreshments.
